P&O Cruises’ 15 year old ship Oriana is to switch to offer cruises exclusively to adults only. The change will come after the 1,818-passenger vessel returns from a regular refit in a year’s time.

From November 30, 2011, the British cruise market leader will operate child-free ships – Oriana, Arcadia and Adonia, which joins the fleet next May as a replacement for Artemis.

P&O Cruises will then have four family-friendly vessels – Azura, Ventura, Oceana and Aurora.

The company is contacting passengers explaining the changes to Oriana. Those booked with children on five cruises on sale which run after the change to Oriana will be offered alternative voyages or full refunds.

“We are totally committed to satisfying the holiday needs of both families and those travelling without children,” the line said in a note to agents.

A company spokeswoman said: “When Artemis leaves the fleet next May the number of holidays exclusively for adults available within the P&O Cruises programme will be effectively reduced as Adonia, her replacement, is a smaller ship.

“We therefore wish to add a third ship to offer this type of holiday. We feel we can do this as Azura, the most recent ship to be added to our fleet provides additional holidays for families.”

P&O Cruises’ new ship Azura sets sail on its maiden voyage to the Mediterranean today following launch celebrations in Southampton over the weekend.

Ballerina and Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell acted as the ship’s godmother on Saturday night, while respected journalist Trevor McDonald was master of ceremonies.

Leading figures from the trade joined P&O Cruises customers and celebrities including Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood, TV presenter Esther Rantzen and actors Tom Chambers and Michelle Collins onboard.

P&O Cruises managing director Carol Marlow said Azura had been designed for the line’s “heartland” customers and would be less overtly positioned as a family ship than sister ship Ventura.

Around 2,000 agents visited Azura following its arrival in port last Wednesday.

Celebrity Eclipse is to return to Southampton for a second summer in 2011.

The Celebrity Cruises ship will be launched at the end of next month before embarking on its inaugural season of itineraries to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
It will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning in April 2011 with new itineraries including a 14-night Italian Mediterranean programme.
And due to demand the 16-night Western Mediterranean and Adriatic coast trip doubles in sailings to four in 2011.
Head of field sales Michael English said: “The decision to bring Celebrity Eclipse back to the UK is great news for customers, our trade partners and the industry as a whole.
“We have already seen huge interest in Celebrity Eclipse for 2010 especially from Southampton. Customers love the idea of sailing on a brand new vessel, and have responded really positively to the UK-specific touches we have made to the on-board services and menu.”
Agents and industry partners from across the country will be attending a week-long series of launch events showcasing Celebrity Eclipse including the charity Celebrity Sunwalk in aid of the breast cancer charity Walk the Walk.

Costa Cruises’ newest ship, Costa Deliziosa, was launched in Dubai this week, and tourism chiefs hope it will propel the emirate’s cruising arrivals to over 500,000 in the next few years.
The ceremony (pictured) took place in front of 3,000 guests, including members of Dubai’s royal family and the ship’s 2,200 passengers. It coincided with the opening of the emirate’s new cruise terminal, which will handle 125 cruise ship calls and 325,000 passengers this year.
Hamad bin Mejren, executive director of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, described Costa’s decision to base two of its ships at Dubai this winter as a “shot in the arm” for the regional cruise industry.
With Royal Caribbean International also basing a ship there this winter, the emirate’s cruise industry is set to continue its growth.
“In 2001, we had 7,000 cruise passengers,” said bin Mejren. “Last year, we had 263,000 passengers and 80 cruise ship calls. By 2015, we expect more than 195 cruise ship calls with 575,000 passengers.”
Costa chairman and chief executive Pier Luigi Foschi underlined the company’s own growth. “We were the first company in the world to offer regular cruises from Dubai in 2006, when we carried 44,000 people. This year, it will be 150,000,” he said.
He also highlighted Costa’s new Red Sea cruises next year and its first world cruise for many years, which is planned for December 2011 and is already more than 30% sold.
