Manchester airport will be the first regional base in the world to host services on the A380 "superjumbo" this autumn. Emirates will base one of its A380s at Manchester from September 1 for a daily Dubai service.
The 517-seat A380 will replace the Boeing 777 on the EK018 route, departing Manchester daily at 13.30 to Dubai and onward destinations.
The Manchester services will boost Emirates’ capacity at the airport by an extra 75 seats a day.
Emirates president Tim Clark said: “Manchester has been one of the strongest performers in our growing network of regional gateways, not only in the UK but globally as well.
“Our customers value our commitment to a regional network at a time when other airlines are abandoning them.
“This is a ground-breaking announcement for the airport and its global standing. It is a well-deserved boost for our loyal and growing customer base in the north west.”
Manchester airport's managing director, Andrew Cornish, said the decision was a historic moment for the airport and the north-west region.
“The A380 is as iconic as Concorde and her introduction into Manchester by one of our most important carriers, Emirates, will provide a daily reminder that regional airports can support successful long-haul services,” he said.

After being given the option of babysitters for a week, myself and my husband decided to have a much earnt rest in the beautiful resort of Taba.
Now this may not be a destination for everyone, however those seeking relaxation, beautiful scenery and the chance to go on some very unique excursions then this is the choice for you.
Also, Egypt has year round sunshine (we travelled there in December and temeperatures did not go below 30 degrees). However be warned that if you plan to go there in July or August, it gets very very hot.
Whilst we were in Egypt, one of the experience we had was a babrebcue in a bedouin tent, underneath the stars with an expert pointing out all the planets to us.
If you have ever experienced star gazing in the desert then you will already know how truly marvelous and beautiful an experience this can be. For those who have never done this, then this is the excursion for you. I never knew the sky could look so beautiful.
Other excursions available from Taba would be going over the border into Israel and Jordan to experience to magnificent Petra (also one of the wonders of the world.)
Don't forget you can also reach Cairo and the Pyramids from Taba, although a very long excursions, usually lasting 1 or 2 nights. But for those wishing to stay in Taba for 2 weeks, this would be an excellent trip to include in your stay.
Another trip to bare in mind: St Catherine's Monatry. This 1 day tour crosses the Sinai Desert through amazing scenery, passing small Bedouin tents and villages to the Monastery of Santa Katarina - the oldest Christian monastery in existence. See the famous Chamber of the Skulls and the 'burning bush'. During the trip back to Taba, stop at Nuweiba on the Sinai shore, for lunch and an opportunity to swim before returning late afternoon.
You do have to make sure that you have chosen a high quality hotel in Taba, as there is not an awful lot to do once you are outside of your hotel, however if you take the time to chose the right place to stay, then this could be a truly magical experience for you.
Don't forget Egypt also has some of the very best coral and sea life in the world, so make sure that you get yourself some coral shoes and some snorkels and go and experience the colours of the ocean. (A huge amount of the corals on the Red Sea start literally feet from the shoreline.)
Or, if like me fish coming that close to you, really isnt your thing then take a trip on a glass bottom boat, you won't regret it!
I would say that the hospitality in Egypt was also second to none and we were constantly pleasantly surprised by just how welcome we were made to feel.

British Airways has claimed it will fly more than 75% of its customers during the next four-day strike which starts tomorrow.
About 240,000 customers are booked to travel with the airline, which estimates 180,000 will be able to borad their flights.
A further 18% have been rebooked to fly with other carriers, while “several thousand” customers have brought forward their departure dates to today.
The airline is confident it will fly a full normal schedule from both Gatwick and London City airports while at Heathrow 70% of long haul flights and 55% of short haul flights are expected to fly.
BA chief executive Willie Walsh said: “I am delighted that we will be able to fly such a large proportion of our customers to their chosen destinations in the coming days.
“The vast majority of British Airways staff, including thousands of cabin crew, are pulling together to serve our customers and keep our flag flying.
“At the same time, I feel really sorry for those customers whose plans have been ruined by Unite’s completely unjustified action. Despite the union’s promises, this strike has affected the Easter holiday plans of thousands of hardworking people.”
The airline has claimed nearly 60% of cabin crew ignored the first strike and reported for work.
Unite, which represents the striking cabin crew, claimed the airline had to resort to running ghost flights to keep services going.
Walsh has also won the backing of Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary over his handling of the strike.

Celebrity Eclipse is to return to Southampton for a second summer in 2011.
The Celebrity Cruises ship will be launched at the end of next month before embarking on its inaugural season of itineraries to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
It will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning in April 2011 with new itineraries including a 14-night Italian Mediterranean programme.
And due to demand the 16-night Western Mediterranean and Adriatic coast trip doubles in sailings to four in 2011.

Travel by coach to the ancient canal town of Wuzhen where we enjoy a leisurely stroll to absorb the atmosphere of this centuries old Chinese town. Sightseeing today includes a stroll though the beautiful Yu Gardens and the Old Town as well as a visit to the Shanghai Museum. We also walk along the famous Bund with its colonial architecture and explore the restored Xintiandi area with its unique 1920's style shikumen buildings. Later we indulge in some shopping along Nanjing Road. In the evening, enjoy a cruise on the panoramic Huangpu River, where the historic Bund and the futuristic Pudong come face to face.
Day 5: Shanghai - Xian
Enjoy the morning at leisure before flying to the former ancient capital of Xian. Enjoy a traditional Shui Jiao dumpling meal in the evening.
Day 6: Xian
Visit one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th Century- The Terracotta Warriors, followed by a walk along the Ancient City Wall. In the evening we enjoy a performance of Tang Dynasty dancing.
Day 7: Xian - Beijing
Visit the Little Wild Goose Pagoda and the renowned Shaanxi Museum which is home to thousands of priceless relics. British Airways cabin crew today began three days of strike action after last-ditch talks between BA and the Unite union failed to reach a deal.
Unite said early indications were that its 12,000 members were supporting the walkout, which was spurred by BA's decision to cut the number of cabin crew on every flight.
BA said Heathrow and Gatwick had got off to a good start and London City was operating as normal.
The airline plans to run 50% of its short-haul Gatwick services, about 60% of its Heathrow long-haul services and about 30% of its Heathrow short-haul flights.
BA has arranged with more than 60 other airlines to take its customers on their flights on the first strike days. It also has use of 23 fully crewed planes leased from other companies.
A BA spokesman said: "Cabin crew are operating as normal at Gatwick and the numbers reporting at Heathrow are above the levels we need to operate our publishing schedule.
"This is the biggest contingency plan we have ever launched."
Picket lines have been set up at Heathrow, but early reports said the airport was much quieter than usual.
Another four days of industrial action are set to begin on 27 March and further action is expected from mid-April unless the deadlock is broken.
