MedinaMarrakesh

Nestled on the northwest corner of Africa, Morocco is a land of diverse landscapes featuring the golden shores of the Mediterranean, the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, the Western Sahara Desert and extensive river systems. morrocco_beaches_l

Overview:

Holidays in Morocco offer a wealth of possibilities, from bronzing on Mediterranean beaches to skiing in the Atlas Mountains, embarking on desert safaris and camel treks to taking historical tours of ancient cities.

Holidays in Morocco often begin with sightseeing in the vibrant city of Marrakech. Backed by the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, Marrakech is a fusion of old and new. In fact the city is divided into old 'Hivernage' and new 'Gueliz'. The well-preserved old city is bursting with historical sites, including: the Djemma El Fna, which is a square in the medina where numerous street performers, dancers, jugglers and snake charmers entertain the crowds; the various souks, which sell everything from spices to shoes; and the Koutoubia Mosque, the largest mosque in Morocco.

Holidays in Morocco also feature other cities of interest. The capital of Morocco, Rabat is relaxed in comparison to the buzzing streets of Marrakech. Like many of Morocco's cities, Rabat mixes the old and new. Here tourists can visit ancient mosques in the morning and relax in trendy cafés in the afternoon.

Make_A_Booking-Morocco_Holiday_Kasbah-1 The former capital of Morocco, Fes is one of the largest medieval cities in the world, and is comprised of a maze of ancient streets lined with grand buildings and magnificent ancient walls. Casablanca is home to the second largest mosque in the world and a bustling historical medina.

Thomas Cook has launched a preview brochure of its summer 2011 programme two months earlier than last year to drive early bookings, particularly from the family market.

The preview of the mainstream summer range features the operator’s most popular holidays, and includes Djerba in Tunisia for the first time.

Last year, Thomas Cook delayed the release of its summer 2010 brochures to concentrate on late bookings. This year, however, the operator wanted to stimulate the early booking market by offering good deals and added value, said Richard Calvert, Thomas Cook’s joint managing director of mainstream travel for the UK and Ireland.

The operator is striving to bolster the family market by offering free kids’ places, free in-flight meals and 10kg of free infant baggage allowance, as well as introducing the Family World programme in Greece, Rhodes, Cyprus and Turkey.

Calvert said: “Family World hotels have beachside locations and activities that parents and children can do together.”

He claimed Thomas Cook would be the only UK operator to offer direct flights from Gatwick and Manchester to Djerba, an island off the coast of Tunisia, featuring it in both its Thomas Cook and Airtours summer-sun brochures.

“Tunisia has been very big for us and we want to offer something different,” he said. “Djerba is a north African island with fantastic beaches and hotels, and a French twist.”

Thomas Cook is adding six properties to its Aquamania Resorts for 2011, in Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt and Florida. It is also offering customers a Big Price Rewind promise, which means many holidays will be available at prices lower than in 2010, and expanding its Kids World clubs to 55 properties.

Airtours’ preview 2011 brochure, which also launches today, is driving early sales by offering customers up to £200 off bookings made by August.

The operator is expanding its SunStar resorts and is introducing the Sunsplash brand – three-star hotels with water-based activities.

Other plans include adding flights from Bournemouth to Antalya and Corfu, and more flights from Newcastle, Bristol, East Midlands, Southampton and Humberside.

Fifty more exclusive properties have been added  to the Thomas Cook and Airtours programmes. A greater choice of durations will also be available including 10 and 11-night options, to cater for consumer demand.

The full Airtours programme will be launched on May 27.

All UK airports reopened at 10pm yesterday (April 20) following six days of flight disruption from a cloud of volcanic ash.

Transport secretary Lord Adonis made the announcement following a meeting with the CAA to assess the continuing effects of the ash cloud from an eruption in Iceland.

Some restrictions will remain, but they will be much less rigorous than those which have been in place since Thursday last week.

The CAA has issued guidance saying after the ban has lifted airlines must do their own safety checks, inspect their aircraft for ash damage and report any incidents to the CAA.

It said: “The CAA has drawn together many of the world’s top aviation engineers and experts to find a way to tackle this immense challenge, unknown in the UK and Europe in living memory.

“Manufacturers have now agreed increased tolerance levels in low ash density areas.”

BA plans to operate all longhaul flights departing from Heathrow and Gatwick today. It is hoped the airline will bring flights into Heathrow and Gatwick between 5am and noon.

BA chief executive Willie Walsh told Sky News it would be weeks before the industry could get back to normal.

He said: "We've had thousands of crew stuck abroad and we have to get them back to Heathrow."

Walsh said the industry had learned from the experience. "We'll look at what has happened and what could have been done better. The industry has learned an awful lot in a very short time.

He added: "The decisions that have been taken were with safety in mind. There could be further eruptions in the next few weeks, and if that means we have to suspend flights again, we will do."

Airline association Iata and airline bosses including Monarch's Tim Jeans have been critical of the handling of the ash crisis, with many calling for the restrictions to be lifted.

A British Airways test flight from Heathrow to Cardiff carried out on Sunday April 18 found no damage to the aircraft or its engines. KLM and the German airline Lufthansa also carried out test flights in their countries’ airspace and said no damage had occurred.

Commercial flights were first grounded on Thursday April 15 as weather systems pushed the first cloud of ash south from Iceland. Volcanic ash is a particular threat to aircraft engines and can cause them to stall.

Airline body Iata said on Friday that its conservative estimate was that the grounding has cost around $200 million per day in lost revenues, plus the additional costs of bringing services back into line once the restrictions are lifted.

Those still stranded overseas should call the Foreign and Commonwealth Office helpline on 0207 008 0000.

Tuesday 20 April 2010

This is somewhere that I have had the pleasure of experiencing myself and I would say it is like a little drop of the Caribbean amongst the Balearic islands. It’s simple beauty makes this the ideal getaway from life.

If this is not quite your thing for a whole week away, then book to stay in Ibiza and have a day trip over to Formentera. With the hover crafts departing Ibiza town every morning and coming back late afternoon, this is such a simple trip to make. Something that I have never forgotten and constantly brings me happy memories, which is why I wanted to tell you more…….

2256893-Cala_Saona_beach-Isla_de_Formentera

Formentera is the sister island to Ibiza. It is one of the jewels of the Mediterranean. It has beautiful beaches and crystal waters. The island is 20 km long and only 2 km wide at its smallest expanse. On the whole it is flat but it rises to its highest point of 193 metres at La Mola from which you have superb vistas from the cliffs plunging down into the sea.FormenteraPropertyAerialView

Overview:

Being small Formentera doesn’t have an airport and this helps to keep the island fairly exclusive. It is reached by ferry from the harbour in Ibiza Town - easily the best way to arrive at this small island. The normal ferry takes an hour from Ibiza-Town to La Savina, whilst you also have the choice of the fast-ferry which takes only 30 minutes, so ideal for day-trippers.

The beaches of this island are the main attraction, beautiful white sandy beaches and azure seas. Many of the beaches are backed by sand dunes, which are protected. To help contain any wear and tear by tourism, the council has installed wooden walkways that enable visitors to walk, cycle or jog the length of the beaches. Some also have wooden benches strategically positioned to help you enjoy the view!

formentera Who Goes There?
People looking for a relaxing holiday will go to Formentera . With it’s large beaches and quieter nightlife it is perfect for anyone wanting a quieter holiday, away from the usual hustle and bustle.

Shopping
Formentera has a variety of shops and markets selling a range of merchandise.

Nightlife
Formentera is a quieter resort than its sister island of Ibiza . The bars and clubs are lively in the area of Es Pujols, but quieter pubs can be found outside of this area. For those wishing to experience Ibiza’s nightlife there is a ferry runs to and from Ibiza.

Restaurants/Cuisine
Formentera has a wide variety of restaurants offering a range of cuisines. Ranging from British to authentic cuisines.

Activities
Formentera boasts a number of water sporting activities. Including; diving, jet skis and snorkelling.

Attractions
Throughout the resort there are a number of varied attractions, a lot of which are historical and formentera_20cultural. Some of which are: the Roman Can Blai encampment and the Ca Na Costa tomb. However, the island of Ibiza has a number of attractions, including water parks. Just take the ferry across which will take approximately 30 minutes.

Transfer Time
Formentera does not have an airport but the neighbouring island of Ibiza does, a ferry is then available to get across to Formentera . The ferry will take approximately 30 minutes.

Weather
Formentera has quite mild winters with hot, sunny summers. Temperatures can reach 31°C between the months of May and October.

Transport
Public buses and taxis are readily available throughout the resort and is the easiest way of getting around. There is also the opportunity to hire a car if you wish to travel further a field. A ferry can be caught to Ibiza and vice versa.

Money
ATM machines, banks and foreign exchange bureaus are readily available throughout the resort. The currency used is the Euro.

Airport operators have backed airlines and tour operators in calling for the UK to change its policy on a blanket closure of airspace.
The Airport Operators Association said the UK should follow European governments in reducing flying restrictions to allow some aircraft to operate under strict conditions.
Chairman Ed Anderson said: “The cost of ongoing disruption for airlines and airports industry alone is £130 million a day. Add to that the cost to businesses dependent on flights to move goods and people and the effect on the wider economy is critical. The Government is also losing £5.5 million a day in Air Passenger Duty.
“Many thousands of UK citizens remain stranded aboard, unable to get home. Unless the UK gets its policy on airspace closure into line with the rest of Europe, Britain will remain closed for business.”
A meeting of European Union ministers yesterday produced plans for a reduction in the no-fly restrictions over the continent.
They suggested dividing airspace into three categories: no-go areas; corridors where flying could take place under strict conditions, and open zones with no safety concerns.

Update from 19th April: Flights from Scottish airports including Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh have begun and will continue until 7pm this evening.

The latest report from the National Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) confirmed flights would also be operating as far south as Newcastle, but restrictions remain further south below the height of the ash cloud at 20,000ft.

Some flights have taken off this morning from Edinburgh and Aberdeen, and overnight the CAA said it would permit aircraft movement in UK airspace above the ash cloud. However most airports in the UK report that they expect no flights to take off before 7pm this evening.

The most recent Nats statement, issued at 9am this morning, said the situation was likely to change throughout the day and a new statement will be issued at 3pm.
A new ash cloud moving south from the Icelandic volcano eruption is making it impossible to predict how long windows of opportunity for flying will remain open and when all UK airspace will be open.

In Europe, flights have taken off from airports including Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

A British Airways test flight from Heathrow to Cardiff carried out yesterday found no damage to the aircraft or its engines. The airline said it had provided fresh evidence that blanket airspace restrictions are unnecessary and should be lifted.

KLM and the German airline Lufthansa have also carried out test flights in their countries’ airspace and said no damage had occurred.

EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said he hoped 50% of Europe's airspace would be risk-free today, and EU transport ministers will hold a video teleconference to assess the situation.

Giving a press conference outside Downing Street yesterday, prime minister Gordon Brown said the Royal Navy could be used to ferry passengers back to Britain.

The announcement came on the day that international airlines and pilots demanded a relaxation of the no-fly zone which has grounded most flights across northern Europe for the past five days.

Commercial flights were first grounded on Thursday as weather systems pushed the cloud of ash south from Iceland. Volcanic ash is a particular threat to aircraft engines and can cause them to stall.

Airline body Iata said on Friday that its conservative estimate was that the grounding would cost around $200 million per day in lost revenues, plus the additional costs of bringing services back into line once the restrictions are lifted.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has set up a helpline for those stranded overseas on 0207 008 0000.

Croatia lures millions of touris3324576134_807dfba10cts to its beautiful Adriatic beaches every year. Holidays in Croatia have become a popular destination for Europeans seeking sun, sea 'n' sand with a difference.

Croatia boasts a string of beautiful Adriatic beaches, a mild Mediterranean climate, more than 1,000 offshore islands, delicious Adriatic seafood, charming medieval villages, fairytale castles and rugged mountain ranges. The warm season spans from April to October, although if visiting Croatia in April, it's advisable to tentatively dip a toe in the  water before diving in. croatia-001

Holidays in Croatia often centre round the stunning Adriatic coastline, with its white sandy beaches set against a backdrop of wooded hills and flanked by the striking Azure waters of the Adriatic. Water sports are particularly popular in Croatia, including scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing and windsurfing. Visitors can also take scenic boat tours to the numerous offshore islands, such as Brac or Hvar. Brac offers pristine beaches, secluded coves and pine-fringed bays, while Hvar is an area of outstanding natural beauty with its rolling hills of lavender, pretty harbours and Renaissance buildings.

Holidays in Croatia are not complete without a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dubrovnik. Set at the foot of the mountains, the city of Dubrovnik 'the jewel of the Adriatic' features a maze of cobbled streets, picturesque squares, palaces and fountains. Those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of coastal resorts can head inland to enjoy a wealth of activities, such as hiking, biking, river rafting and fishing. Evenings in Croatia are spent strolling along beachfront promenades and tucking in to the catch of the day in traditional tavernas.

cyprus-beach-weddings%20(52)

Both myself and my husband had always dreamt of getting married on a beach at sunset, before I became a travel agent, I would have thought that it would cost me the earth and it would be a hard task to pull off.

However, after helping other clients get ready for their beach weddings whilst working in a high street travel agency, I soon became to realise, that as long as you are organised, sorting out a wedding abroad is probably easier than organising a wedding in the UK.

So after convincing my partner that it would be a good time to propose to me, I set to work on finding the perfect destination for our dream wedding.

There are so many places out there to choose from, whether it be Italy, Caribbean, aboard a cruise ship or the an island in the Indian Ocean. However as we have quite a big family with lots of young children, all of whom we wanted to invite to our wedding, so we decided on Cyprus.

With only a 4 and a half hour flight away from our local airport of Exeter, it couldn’t get more ideal for us.

The next stage was choosing a tour operator that I was confident would get us everything that we wanted in our wedding, after a long search Planet Holidays were more than fabulous, and this is what we booked….

ledra

We stayed at the Ledra Beach, Paphos, on an All Inclusive basis, arriving on the 3rd May 2006, as you have to be in the country for at least 5 days before your wedding, we decided to book the wedding date for the 9th May, which coincidentally fell on my mums  50th Birthday.

As neither myself or my husband had been married before, the only paperwork that we needed to take with us on our holiday were passports and birth certificates. (Although this varies from country to country).

When booking your wedding with your holiday you get the chance to pre book hairdressers, flowers, cakes, wine etc… However with the package that we chose you had to pay and plan the wedding breakfast in resort with the hotels manager.

So on the 3rd May, we flew from Exeter to Cyprus…..

On arrival we had a letter from our wedding coordinator (included in the price) telling us that she would meet us the next day and take us off the the town hall to ensure that we collect our wedding license and get the appropriate stamps.

cyprus-beach-weddings%20(23) We had regular contact from our wedding coordinator, always there for advice and help before the big day. Putting us in touch with the hotel manager to ensure they knew just what we needed for our wedding breakfast and how we wanted our room decorated for the wedding ceremony.

Everything was going so smoothly until my bridesmaid missed her plane……but phew…in the nick of time she arrived!

As we had decided to get married in the afternoon the whole wedding party had plenty of time to get ready, have time on the beach (although please do not do as I did and spend too much time on the beach as I ended up with a sunburnt arm in my wedding photo!) and calm any pre wedding nerves.wedding

Then the moment arrived…..we got married in a room set a side in the hotel for Weddings with the Mayor of Paphos marrying us          in front of our family and friends. This was followed by photos, courtesy of our lovely Cypriot photographer, drinks then onto a blessing on the beach, performed by mother in law, who also happens to be a Methodist Minister.

Then onto our reception next to the beach.

As we had booked 2 weeks away, we then had the last week of our holiday to have our honeymoon, returning to the UK as Mr and Mrs after a stress free wedding and without feeling like we had blown our bank balances on the big day.

wedding 2

I hope this has given those of you interested in getting married abroad an idea of what it really is like, and if you need any advise or costings, then please do not hesitate to get in touch!

As I have been lucky enough to travel to many destinations I thought I would tell others about my own experiences in some of my favourite places.

I travelled to the lovely little island of Menorca in June 2009 with my husband and two small children, this was my first visit to the island, although not my first time in the Balearics. I would say that this island exceeded my expectations. Even though I adore Ibiza and would revisit Mallorca, I would say that Menorca is by far the prettiest of the islands.

beach in front of hotel at arenal den castell

We stayed in a little resort called Arenal De’n Castell, somewhere perfect for those wanting a quiet week away and with children that are quite happy to play on the beach or be entertained by resort staff. However if you are a family that needs plenty to see and do then this might not be the perfect resort for you, so why don’t you chose somewhere like…Son Bou or Cala N’ Bosch?

The hotel that we chose to stay in was the Aguamarina, although this was not a particularly pretty hotel to look at, the rooms were clean, the hotel staff were fabulous and the childrens club was just perfect to keep our 4 year old entertained whilst myself and my husband spent a little time unwinding by the pool.

A little piece of area info for you….

The second largest of the Balearic Islands, Menorca (also spelt Minorca), lies 140 miles east of the mainland and 25 miles northeast of Majorca. 33 miles long and about 10 miles wide, the island has a largely rugged northern half with a deeply incised coastline, contrasting with the much gentler profile of the south finally giving way to a string of white sandy beaches. The capital Mahon, with its large natural harbour, is in the east, 2 miles from the airport. A good highway links the town with the much older Ciudadela at the opposite end of the island. The resorts are almost all purpose-built and dotted along the coast mainly in the south, but in spite of these developments, Menorca appears relatively unspoilt and quiet compared to its neighbours.
